What it is
KOSPI refers both to the main board of the Korea Exchange (KRX) and to its composite index, which measures the total market capitalization of all listed stocks against a base value of 100 set on January 4, 1980.
Who is listed
Large, established companies such as Samsung Electronics, SK hynix and Hyundai Motor. Listing requirements are stricter than on KOSDAQ, so most KOSPI companies have larger and steadier revenue.
What to keep in mind
KOSPI is weighted by market capitalization, so a big move in Samsung Electronics or SK hynix can move the whole index. Even on an up day most stocks may fall, so check the number of advancing and declining stocks too.
